Experience the Height of Adventure: Discover Tomichi Pass

Hidden within the magnificent Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Tomichi Pass beckons explorers with its captivating blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Rising at an elevation of 11,962 feet, this high mountain pass offers a window into the geological past and the vibrant mining history of Gunnison County.

Tomichi Pass is traversed by Forest Road 888, a challenging four-wheel-drive path that meanders through some of Colorado’s most breathtaking scenery. Particularly notable for its narrow and exposed sections on the north side, the road promises an exciting adventure for off-road enthusiasts.

As you journey along the path, you are retracing the historical wagon trails from the 1870s that once connected the bustling mines and mining camps of the region. Despite later improvements to accommodate wagons, the road remained less traveled, adding an extra layer of untouched beauty and tranquility to the trail.

Geologically speaking, Tomichi Pass is incredibly diverse. The pass lies on a ridge composed of Middle Tertiary intrusive rock. This intriguing geological formation is a granitic stock intruded into the older Proterozoic granitic rock and Paleozoic sedimentary rock in the area. It was these intrusions that lured miners in the 1800s in search of veins of gold, silver, and lead.

Adding a dash of unexpected geological charm, the ridge to the east of Tomichi Pass is studded with ash flow tuffs—relics from the volcanic activity in the San Juan volcanic field to the southwest. These volcanic eruptions took place during the Middle Tertiary period, around the same time that granites were being intruded below the surface.

Evidence of past mining activity on either side of the pass stands as a testament to the area’s rich history. It’s not just the captivating scenery that makes Tomichi Pass special—it’s the tangible echoes of the past that have been etched into the landscape.

Embarking on a journey through Tomichi Pass is to walk in the footsteps of history while experiencing the profound majesty of nature. Whether you are a history buff, a geological enthusiast, or an adventure lover, Tomichi Pass promises a journey that is both enriching and unforgettable.
